Pursuant to call of Mayor B~rd, the Oi ty Council of the City ofokeechobee,;, l
Florida, met in special session 1n the City Hall at g.OO o'clock P. M. and the ~ -
following were present: J. Denham Bird, Mayor, H. L. Chandler, President of City
Council, Councilmen S. R. Raifsnider,Ben Walker, Albert Berka and J. H. Walker, Sr.
with R. P. Fletcher, City Clerk, L. C. Tootle, Water Superintendent and N. O. Stew-
art, Acting Chief of Police in attendance.
~yor Bird stated that meeting of Council had been called for the purpose of
transacting regular monthly business of Council, as regular meeting of Council was
not held on June 3rd on account of the Primary Election.
Resignation of Lon Stewart as Chief of Police of the City of Okeechobee, ~
Florida, was received and read. ;'1

Councilman Berka moved that Council accept resignation of Lon Stewart as I¡
Ii
Chief of Police of the City of Okeechobee, Florida, motion seconded by Councilman
Raifsnider and carried.
ApPlications for the office of Chief of Police were received from the followingi~
J. B. Atkinson, C. W. Arrants, L. L. Conrad, R. C. Evans, J. O. Platt, N. O.
Stewart, and R. J. Turner.
Upon motion by Councilman Ben Walker, seconded by Councilman lerka, Council
went into executive session.
Council resùmed open session.
Councilman Raifsnider moved that salary of Chief of Police be fixed at $125.00
per month with an allowance of $25.00 per month for maintenance of automobile and
that City furnish gasoline and oil for his automobile, motion seconded by Council-
man J.H. Walker, Sr. and upon roll call the vote was as follows:

COuncilman Berka moved that Council elect a Chief of Police for the balance of
-the term ending January 5th, 1931, motion seconded by Councilman Ben Walker and
carried.
The vote for Chief of Police was taken by ballot~ and was as follows:

J. C. Platt received one vote
R. J. Turner received one vote

Resolution
WHEREAS, The'Okeechobee Flood Control Board has designated the City of Okee-
chobee as its Engineering hea,dquarters for the supervision and construction of I
levees, canale and navigation projects in Lake Okeechobee, and
VffiEREAS, Okeechobee Flood Control Board, at its meeting in September, 1929,
went on record requesting its Engineer to suggest to the United States War Depart-
ment that the City of Okeechobee be used by it for its Army Engineers, in case the
United States Government made an appropriation for the purpose of flood control and
navigation in Lake Okeechobee, and
WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States
r has passed a Bill making an appropriation for this purpose, and
, WHEREAS, the Senate of the United States has this Bill now under consideration
-- and which has been approved by the Co~~erce Committee of the Senate, and
WHEREAS, the Conners Highway, leading along the Northeastern shores of Lake
Okeechobee, is to be freed of tOlls, making the City of Okeechobee the most acces-
sible pt~ce from which the Army Engineers could operate, and I
. WHEREAS, Railroad and highway transportation,facilities are far more adequate I
than those of any other community on Lake Okeechobee, and
WHEREAS, the City has ample housing accommodations, at low rental rates, and
office rooms which will be tendered to the War Department free of rent, together
with ample school facilities and an adequate water suDDly'

I NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF OKEECHOBEE,
do hereby direct attention to Secretary of War Hurley, and Chief of Staff of Army
Engineers, Major Brown, to these advanta~es aforementioned with the reQuest that

for grading and ditching, said amount to be applied on City taxes for the years

authorized to execl1te two notes under date of May 2l~t, 1930 for $1,25o.00 each,
payablt: to Pauly Jail Building Company in one and two years respectively, v!!Ì thi

account due said Company by City of Okeechobee, motion seconded by Councilman
Raifsnider and carried.
Upon motion of Councilman Berka, seconded by Councilman Ben ijalker, Council
authorized purchase of twenty-five hydrant caps.
