Exuected Return on Investment:
Investment is the protection of the State's endangered waters; reduced pollutants entering protected State
waters—Taylor Creek, Lake Okeechobee Watershed Basin, Caloosahatchee River Basin and Estuary; Everglades
West Coast. Project supports and augments FDEP Basin Management Action Plans, the SFWMD Northem
Everglades and Estuaries Protection Plan and the Federal CEPP, State water quality standards. It also addresses
life, health, safety issues and protects Florida wildlife and their habitats, (i.e., Manatees).
The importance of proper drainage depends on our interconnected drainage system to remove excess water
after storm events, including tropical storms and hurricanes. Vegetatiou and structures along a canal right of way
may end up in the canal and cause blockages around downstream water control structures. In turn, these
obstructions will prevent water from properly draining and could result in flooding that endangers the safety of
residents iu the immediate area and many miles away. Field staff must have clear access to canals for routine
maintenance, repair and debris removal. During times of disaster and emergency recovery, access becornes even
more important as recovery teams have to navigate through the canal system to perform emergency maintenance
tasks.
Debris and trash also can be carried by the stormwater runoff directly into a conveyance system, a lake or
canal. Once there, debris can pose dangers for aquatic plants and wildlife. Birds and fish can be poisoned by
eating cigarette butts. Mineral oils and coolant from cars pollute the water and kill fish, frogs and other aquatic
species. These substances can also harm the wildlife that eats those species.
This report is submitted in accordance with the reporting requirements of the above DEP Agreement number
and accurately reflects the activities associated with the project.
