Mentoring impacts lives! Students who meet regularly with mentors are less likely to start
drinking, use drugs, skip school, or have declining mental health. They are more likely to
participate in extracurricular activities and to attend college as well.
Okeechobee is a Title I district, meaning that the percentage of low-income students in every
school is high enough that the government provides additional funds, recognizing that students
from low-income families often need extra supports to succeed. Our schools range in poverty
level from 54% to 77%, which indicates that most of our students need these extra supports.

Complete a quick application through the BUDDY Mentoring Program, then a volunteer
application through the OCSB District website that includes a reference check, fingerprinting,
criminal background check, and a face-to-face interview. Applicants will also complete a
questionnaire designed to find points of compatibility with mentees, and a comprehensive
twelve hour training, broken down into four 3-hour blocks.
