Request to postpone:
Okeechobee City Council,
We would suggest that the council postpone all discussions until after the individuals employed
by Okeechobee City Fire Dept have successfully completed the paramedic program at which time
they are currently enrolled. To make decisions regarding employment in the midst of this course is
unfair to both the council, and the individuals enrolled. Waiting until after the successful completion of
the program will ensure that negotiations are done without speculation, as to what the future licensure
status of the individuals will be. We estimate course completion to be April - June 2021.
If the council does not find the aforementioned proposal agreeable the union requests that all
further discussions cease until the first regularly scheduled City Council meeting in November of
2020. We are currently in the process of discussion with all of the union members and then with the
County Commission. We believe this to be in the best interest of the individuals who have devoted
their lives to protecting the safety of the residents of the City of Okeechobee.
