A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF OKEECHOBEE,
FLORIDA, ENDORSING FUNDING REQUESTS TO
DEVELOP RAIL CORRIDORS INTENDED TO BRING
STABILITY TO THE NATION'S RAIL PASSENGER
NETWORK; PROVIDE STATES THE FUNDING NEEDED
TO DEVELOP SUCCESSFUL RAIL CORRIDORS;
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the State of Florida is one of the most congested states in the country; and
WHEREAS, Florida's statewide population is projected to increase immensely over a
period of ten years and the State's already- strained transportation infrastructure
cannot accommodate that population and ensuing economic growth; and
WHEREAS, passenger rail provides an efficient, safe and environmentally sound
means of transportation for commuters, business, and leisure travelers; and
WHEREAS, the State of Florida has worked together to improve access to the Amtrak
system; and
WHEREAS, Amtrak provides essential service to Florida communities and continues to
show strong ridership despite a significant downturn in travel in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, Congress has introduced several measures intended to provide states with
a dedicated source of funding to develop viable, safe, efficient passenger rail
networks.
NOW THEREFORE, it is resolved before the City Council for the City of Okeechobee,
Florida; presented at a duly advertised public meeting; and passed by majority
vote of the City Council; and properly executed by the Mayor or designee, as
Chief Presiding Officer for the City:
ATTEST:
1. THAT the City of Okeechobee, Florida hereby endorses and urgently
requests that all the Members of Congress representing the State of
Florida support passage of legislative measures intended to bring stability
to the nation's rail passenger network and provide states the funding
needed to develop successful rail corridors.
2. THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately upon passage by
majority vote of the members of the City Council.
