1992-02 SR 70/Intrastate Hwy SystemRESOLUTION NO. 92-2
RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ADDITION OF STATE
ROAD 70 TO THE FLORIDA INTRASTATE HIGHWAY
• SYSTEM
WHEREAS, the passage of Senate Bill 1316 during the 1990
Florida Legislative session created the Florida Intrastate Highway
System (System), which is to be a highway network of statewide
limited access facilities and controlled access facilities; and
WHEREAS, the System is to be developed and managed by the
Florida Department of Transportation (Department) to provide
facilities that allow for high-speed and high-volume traffic
movements, and meet certain criteria and standards within a twenty
(20) year period; and
WHEREAS, a Florida Intrastate Highway System Plan (Plan)
is to be developed by the Department to be submitted to the 1992
Legislature for adoption, said Plan to outline implementation
strategies and projects of those segments identified on the System
network maps, and the manner in which such strategies and projects
will comply with the criteria and standards within a twenty (20)
year period; and
WHEREAS, after having reviewed the proposed Plan, the
City of Okeechobee has determined that State Road 70 (SR 70), which
is an existing South Central Florida East-West corridor of commerce
between the Atlantic coast and the Gulf coast, does not appear on
said Plan maps, although there was included on previous maps a
proposed limited access corridor in the vicinity of SR 70; and
WHEREAS, there are numerous reasons justifying the
inclusion of SR 70 on the Florida Intrastate Highway System,
including but being limited to, the maintenance of levels of
service in the face of increasing traffic volumes; the future
safety of the travelling public; the free flow of goods and
services and other economic benefits to the City and businesses
spanning the State from coast to coast; and the provision of an
essential and efficient hurricane evacuation route from coastal
communities to inland counties.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of
Okeechobee hereby supports any and all efforts to insure that State
Road 70 is included in the Florida Intrastate Highway System.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Okeechobee does
hereby request that the Florida Department of Transportation and
the Florida Legislature amend the proposed Florida Intrastate
Highway System Plan to include State Road 70 on its highway network
maps and thereby designate it an Intrastate roadway.
ADOPTED this 21st day of January, 1992.
