The City Council of the City of 0keechobee, Florida, met in regular session
at the City Hall at 7:00 P. M. on the above date with the following present: Mayor
H. H. Raulerson, President Chandler, Councilmen Coker, Ro~, Thomas and Watford with G. C.
Du~rance, City Attorney and Lorena Spivey, City Clerk.
Minutes of the meeting held September 14, 1953, were read and approved as read.

A question as to the City Police Department radio and the charge on same assess-
ed by the State Highway Patrol was discussed also the matteP of the City obtaining a per-
mit to operate same. The matter was passed for further consideration.
Councilman Roe moved to adopt a Resolution desiginating the dyke as "Hoover
Dyke", seconded by Council Watford and carried. The following is the Resolution:
RESOLUTION
WHERF_%S, the Fake 0keechobee Section was visited by a severe Hurricane
in th® yea~ 1928, causing millions of damage to property and the loss
of seweral hundred lives, and
WHEREAS, Hon. Herbert Hoover, who was then President of the United

States, did pay a personal visit to the Lake Okeechobee Area for
the purpose of determining the POSSIBILITY OF preventing a re-
currence of such a disaster, and
WHEREAS, the said Herbert Hoover did exert his influence in per-
suading the Congress of the United States, to appropiate such
sums of money necessary for the construction of the present "Dike"
which surround a great part of Lake O~eechobee, thus preventing
the big lake from repeating its destruction of property and lives,
as in 1928, now
THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Council of Okeechobee, Florida, that
"honor should be given-where honor is due", and the said Council
respectfully request our representatives in Congress, to cause the
said "dikes" to be named in honor of the said Hon. Herbert Hoover,
and the dikes be hereinafter designated as "The Hoover Dike".

Two building permit applications wave approved and Clerk ordered to issue
permits to T. J. Cant~ell and Independent Missionary Baptist Church. The Church ~
permit was ordered issued without cost.
A letter from the State Board of Health regarding the sewer program was read
and ordered filed for further reference.
Lorena Spivey, City Tax Assessor, presented the City Tax Assessment Roll for
the year 1955 as completed by her to the City Council for examination by the Council.
Upon motion by Councilman Watford, seconded by Councilman Roe and carried, the Council
accepted the City Tax Assessment Roll for the year 1953, as prepared by the City Tax

~ of the persons, firms, corporations named in the annexed Assessment Roll,
and tames set down on said Roll opposite each name or parcel of land there-
in described, and in case the taxes as extended are not paid by the time
prescribed by Law, you are to collect same in the manner prescribed by Law,
all money collected you are to account for to the City Council of the City
of 0keechobee, Florida, and you are further required to make collections
and report and a final report to and settlement with the City Council of
said City as required by law and ordinances.

The 1952 Financial Statement of the City of 0keechobee completed by W. V.
Wilson, Jr. was reviewed and upon motion by Councilman Watford, seconded by Councilman
Thomas and car~ed, was accepted.
Mayor Raulerson reported the need of white way light repair. The Council
agreed to investigate matter.
Councilman Coker brought before the Council the question as t o whether the
City would agree to close certain streets leading to the proposed site of the Florida
Palms, Inc. when plant begins construction. The Council agreed to corporate in this
matter and to do what would be necessary in behalf of the industry.
Councilman Watford moved that the City deed to J. N. Roe, Sr. that portion
