1953-10-05 Hoover DikeR E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, the Lake Okeechobe Section was visited by a
severe Hurricane in the year 19 , causeing millions of
damage to property and the loss of several hundred lives, and
WHEREAS, Hon, herbert Hoover, who was then president
of the United. States, did ?ay P, personel visit to *Qhe Lake
Okeechobee Area for the purpose of determining the m��C
POSSIBILITY OF preventing a recurrence of such a disaster, and
WFEREAS, the said Herbert Hoover did exert his influence
in persuading the Congress of the United States, to approplate
such sums of money necessary for the construction of the
present "Dike" which surround a great part of Lake Okeechobee,,
thus preventing the big; Lake from repeating its destruction
of property and lives, as in 1928, now -
THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Council of Okeechobee,
Florida, that "honor should be given -where honor is due",
and the said Council respectfully request our representatives
In Congress, to cause the said "dikes" to be named in honor
of the said Hon. Herbert Hoover, and the dikes be hereinafter
designated as "The Hoover Dike".
