The department's standard is to install galvanized steel mast arm poles or trusses to support traffic signals. We have to this point supported application of paint for aesthetic purposes when requested by a local agency. The paint color is specified by the local agency and applied on the poles under a project either let by the department or installed by permit. We are discovering the paint applied to galvanized poles is failing at several locations through out the state. The department is pursuing warranty claims for locations within the warranty period of 820 days from the date of acceptance. Repainting of the failing mast arm poles is very expensive. Since paint is applied to the galvanized poles as a request from a local agency, the department from this point will require a maintenance agreement with the requesting agency to maintain the paint on the poles beyond the warranty time period. In addition, we expect the agency to notify us about paint failures within the warranty period so we can ensure timely processing of a warranty claim. We will be forwarding an addendum(separate Attachment)to the current Traffic Signal Maintenance Agreement requiring commitment to maintain the paint. We will continue painting galvanized poles when requested by local agencies who sign the addendum. However based on our experience,we strongly recommend against application of paint to galvanized poles. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at(863)519-2202.
